In conjunction with the Grand Opening of the new Christopher Guy showroom and BritWeek, the second annual Christopher Guy BritWeek Design Award ceremony will be held on Saturday, May 5, 2012 from 6:30 PM to 9:00 PM. Sponsored by Architectural Digest, the private award presentation and cocktail reception party will announce and celebrate the winner
and runner-up of the design competition. Guests will include prominent design professionals in the Los Angeles and Southern
California area, the BritWeek organization and their guests, the design schools and their students, and the prestigious panel of judges: renowned Designers Christopher Guy Harrison, Philip Treacy, Martyn Lawrence Bullard and Birgit Muller.
THE DESIGN CHALLENGE
Christopher Guy is calling out to aspiring interior and product designers to claim their chance to enter the high-end furnishing industry.
The second annual Christopher Guy BritWeek Design Award requires students to design pieces of furniture or decorative accessories following key Christopher Guy design elements, but based on the remarkable creations of Philip Treacy, the celebrated haute couture hat designer, who also has designed hats for Alexander McQueen, Karl Lagerfeld at Chanel, Valentino, Ralph Lauren and Donna Karan.

Each entrant will design a furniture or decorative piece, such as a mirror following in the Christopher Guy design spirit, but based on the remarkable creations of celebrated haute couture hat designer Philip Treacy. The design challenge will be to conceptualize a full lifestyle setting incorporating all the elements of a given room and to design one or more of the pieces in the room, inspired by Philip Treacy’s famous hat designs.
Example: Christopher Guy Harrison, head designer and CEO of Christopher Guy, inadvertently designed a mirror in 2003 that was subsequently used for a hotel project in Ireland (shown beside). The mirror frame drew on similar lines to the hat designed by Philip Treacy for Camilla Parker Bowles at her Royal Wedding with HRH Prince Charles in 2005. After the wedding, the Christopher Guy mirror frame was known as The Camilla and still forms part of Christopher Guy’s extensive range of fabulous hand-carved mirror frames.
The design developed should represent a piece of furniture or a decorative item. The piece will be judged on its elegance, commercial viability, originality with a Philip Treacy DNA, and trueness to the Christopher Guy style.
