"Hamilton" musical opens in UK with praise

The first UK performance of Broadway hit Hamilton has left audience members singing the hip-hop musical's praises.

Self-proclaimed "theatre addict" Alex Packer called the performances from the London cast "faultless", and Jen Waller called the evening "truly special".

The Daily Mail's Baz Bamigboye said it had been "the best first preview of a musical [he'd] seen since Miss Saigon".

In the Telegraph, meanwhile, Veronica Lee said the show at the Victoria Palace theatre "went without a hitch". However, the shows opening was delayed by a fortnight due to the complete restoration of the theatre

Lin-Manuel Miranda, creator of hit hip-hop musical Hamilton, had previously spoken about the "frustrating" delay in bringing the show to London. Which meant that thousands of ticket-holders had to re-arrange their performance dates.

Miranda said: "It's frustrating. I share the frustration of everyone who had to get re-seated." The first preview started on 6 December but had originally been due to start on the 21st November. The official opening night took place exactly a month later on the 21st December.
